A clay lick becomes possible

This is the honest headline. Chuncho, the largest macaw colpa in the region, sits hours up the Tambopata and performs at first light. Reaching it means sleeping close, which means an itinerary with a spare night in it. The $500 four-day uses two lodges to do exactly that.

Smaller licks, parakeets, parrots, are reachable in three days. The macaws are not.

And the days stop sprinting

Three-day tours are efficient. Paradise Yakari's version fits a canopy walk, a zip line, kayaking, Monkey Island, Sandoval Lake, a night walk, a clay lick and fishing into two nights, and its 4.4 rating is the lowest at that length.

Add a night and the same operator's four-day spreads the load. Green House goes further and gives a whole morning to looking for three-toed sloths, two and a half hours of drifting and scanning, which is not something a three-day schedule can afford.

What the fourth night costs

Three operators on this page sell the same trip at two lengths, which is the cleanest way to price a night in the forest. All figures read from the operator listings in September 2026.

Day 1: the river, the first walk, the first night

Pickup from the airport, bus station or a town office, then 30 minutes to an hour by boat to the lodge. Lunch, then the first activity, for the adventure-led tours a 35-metre canopy tower, a 190-metre zip line and kayaking; for Green House a riverbank walk to a lookout for sunset.

Every tour ends day one after dark: caimans by boat, or tarantulas, frogs and night monkeys on foot.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake, and how operators time it

The lake is the fixed point of almost every four-day itinerary. The sequence, boat, 3 km walk through flooded forest, paddle canoe, does not vary. The hour does.

Most operators go at dawn. Green House goes in the afternoon and explains why on its own listing: it is cooler and the animals are more active, and you finish with sunset on the Madre de Dios at about 18:30. Both defensible; worth knowing which you are booking.

Day 3: the day that separates the tours

This is where four-day itineraries diverge. Green House spends it with a Machiguenga family. Peru Amazon Trips visits a Matsigenka community. Paradise Yakari fills it with an indigenous community visit and more river time. The Chuncho tour moves you to the second lodge, upriver, ready for the lick.

If a cultural day does not appeal, that is a reason to compare itineraries rather than prices.

Day 4: the clay lick, then out

Where a lick is included it takes the last morning, before the boat back. Two things to plan for: breakfast on day one and lunch on the final day are outside the price on some listings, and one operator notes that departure to the airport happens straight after breakfast, so book the flight accordingly.

If you want the animals

Green House at $445. It has the largest review base of any multi-day tour here at 285, no zip line to eat the hours, a dedicated sloth-and-caiman river run and the reserve fee inside the price. The group cap of 18 is its weak point.

If you want the macaws

The Chuncho tour at $500, or JunglePro's three-day at $550 if you would rather trade a night for Tres Chimbadas Lake. Both need an early alarm and both depend on the morning weather, a wet dawn empties the colpa.

If you want the smallest group

Eco Amazonia at $494 caps at eight and includes national park fees, but wants 44 days' notice for a refund and a minimum of two travellers. The Chuncho tour caps at nine with normal 24-hour cancellation.

If you want the cheapest four days

Paradise Yakari at $350, with the reserve fee and every meal included and the most precisely described activities on the page, tower height, zip-line length, bridge length. You are trading quiet wildlife hours for adventure ones.

If you have five days

The $739 five-day expedition is the only itinerary that gives Sandoval Lake and a macaw lick separate days instead of stacking them, and it ends with the Puerto Maldonado market. Cancellation is three days out, not 24 hours.

The official tariff for four days

SERNANP charges foreign visitors S/ 150 for a pass covering four to thirty days in Tambopata, about $40, against S/ 60 for two to three days. Most four-day tours here include it.

The exception is Monte Amazonico, which charges a flat $20 per person for the entrance on both its three-day and four-day trips. That is below the published four-day rate, which suggests it covers a shorter window inside the protected area than the whole itinerary. Ask what it buys when you book. Missing the cancellation line

Twenty-four hours is the norm here, and two listings are nothing like it: one wants 44 days' notice for a refund, and one is non-refundable from the moment you pay. Both are good tours. Neither should be booked on a maybe.

If your dates are soft, stay inside the 24-hour pool. If they are fixed, the stricter listings are open to you, and one of them has the smallest group on the page.

Assuming four days means four full days

Day one usually starts at midday, after your flight lands, and the last day ends with a morning transfer. One operator notes that departure to the airport happens straight after breakfast, which makes a four-day tour closer to three full days in the forest.

That is not a complaint about the tours; it is a reason to book the return flight for the afternoon and not the morning.

Booking a clay lick without reading the weather clause

Clay licks perform at first light and only when the morning is fair. Rain and the birds stay in the canopy. No operator on this page guarantees macaws, and any site that gives you a percentage is inventing it.

What you can control is the number of chances: a tour that sleeps close to the lick can try again, and a five-day itinerary gives the lick its own morning rather than stacking it against the lake.
